Game rules

In TilingKing, territory is gained with the placement of each piece on the board by physically covering tiles on the board.

Territory can also be captured by creating a closed ring of connected pieces which surrounds some space on the board, but only if that enclosed space contains NO MORE than 1 piece belonging to each opponent. If the area contains two or more pieces from any opponent, then the territory cannot be captured. When the space enclosed by a ring DOES contain AT MOST 1 piece belonging to each opponent, these piece(s) are removed from the board and are returned to the set of opponent's pieces. Such captured pieces may be played again on a later turn. Territory which is captured by a player is owned by that player, and opponents may no longer play pieces in the captured space. At the end of the game, the player with the greatest amount of territory is the winner.

  1. The board is a tiling composed of either triangles, squares, or hexagons, and can be of varying sizes, and have different configurations of neutral tiles (which are explained below).

  2. Each player is provided a set of pieces of a given color to be played on the game board. The type and quantity of each piece in a set depends upon the size and type of the chosen game board.

  3. Black tiles on the board represent neutral tiles in that they don't belong to any player. Neutral tiles can be used by any player as their own tiles, however, when creating a ring of connected pieces in order to capture territory. They do not count, however, towards the summation of a player's territory at the end of the game.

  4. Players take turns placing a single piece at a time on the board so that it does not overlap neutral tiles or any other pieces on the board. Alternatively, a player may pass her current turn, or pass all remaining turns (without resigning), if she sees no way to improve her strategic position. A player may also resign on any turn, indicating her concession of the game victory to her opponent(s).

Note: When a game is played through the TilingKing server, the player which posted the game seek will always move first.

  5. Adjacent pieces in a chain of connected pieces must be fully-connected. That is, adjacent pieces must be in full contact, sharing an entire side of a tile. They cannot be in contact at merely a corner of a tile. See the pictures below of fully-connected and un-connected pieces.

  6. The game ends when all players have passed consecutively, or when all players but one have resigned. At that point the game is scored and a winner is declared. Tie games are possible since each player's score is simply the sum of board tiles covered by the player's pieces on the board AND the tiles making up territory that the player captured.
